The Brainerd Nordic Ski Club introduces children ages 4 to 14 to the joys of Nordic skiing and providing a fun winter activity for the entire family.
What is the Brainerd Lakes Area Youth Ski program? The BNSC wanted to provide the area's youth the opportunity to learn to ski with other kids their age and encourage their enjoyment- especially when skiing together. The club has partnered with Minnesota Youth Ski League (MYSL) to provide lessons and equipment to children ages 4 to 14 in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Families who register on MYSL.org can sign up for lessons and, if needed, equipment. Lessons are $35 for the 8 weeks ($40 if registered after Dec 15th) and equipment is $35 for the season. Children take home the equipment to use for the winter, not just to use on the day of the lessons. Families need to register for lessons in order to qualify for equipment rental. If you do not need youth equipment, you can just sign up for lessons.
The program consists of multiple levels of instruction based on age and skill/ability. Children who are older but have not skied much can move up levels as they progress and acquire better skills on skis. There are MYSL fleece hats for first year participants. Students are also encouraged to keep track of their kilometers skied during the season. Awards for distance and participation levels are given at the potluck at the end of the season.
Registration needs to be done at the MYSL.org website and generally closes during the early part of December. If you have problems with online registration, please contact Amy as directed on the registration page. If you need to rent equipment, registration will ask for child's shoe size, height and weight so the appropriate size skis and boots can be paired with the child. The only way to rent equipment is to sign up through this registration process. If you haven't had to give information about your child's weight/height, you need to check and see if you've signed up for ski rental before finishing the registration process.
Schedule and Meeting Place
We meet for nine Sunday afternoons, 2:00 – 3:30 at the Northland Arboretum. No lesson on the Lumber Jack Jaunt day. A fun potluck ends the season on the last day. Ski handout night is usually in early December at the Northland Arboretum. The Arboretum building will be open and available to skiers each Sunday for warming up and general instructions. We ask that youth arrive 10-15 minutes early to allow time to sign in and put on ski equipment, so we can start promptly at 2 PM.
Weather
We will meet regardless of snow conditions. Please bring your gear even if there is no snow, as we will use the poles for pole hiking and new skiers can practice getting skis on/off and getting up. If the temperature drops below minus 10F, class may be cancelled. We will e-mail a cancellation notice at least one hour before class.
Volunteers
The Brainerd Youth Ski League is a volunteer organization, and we are also grateful for help! We ask parents to take turns bringing snacks each week, helping with lessons, and staffing and cleaning the Arboretum building. Members of the Brainerd Nordic Ski Club will be volunteering as coaches, but parents who ski are also urged to consider coaching. You don’t need to be an elite skier, you just have to like helping kids and having fun!
We look forward to seeing you on the trails this winter and hope for another great year of snow!
